To help prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria, Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) should be used with caution. If you are taking other medications that may interact with Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim), your doctor may advise you to change your dose or use an alternate antibiotic. These medications include aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), cephalosporins (eg, cephalexin), fluoroquinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin), macrolides (eg, clarithromycin), nitrofurantoin (eg, amikacin), aminoglycoside antibiotics (eg, amikacin and cephalexin), quinolone antibiotics (eg, penicillins, nalidixic acid), protease inhibitors (eg, amikacin and cefotaxime), and sulfonamides (eg, sulfadiazine).
You should not take Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) if you are allergic to sulfa drugs (eg, sulfa cephalosporin, sulfa cephalosporin plus metronidazole).

A new study that found that Bactrim, a popular antibiotic prescribed for treating urinary tract infections, may help prevent the development of bladder cancer.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 11,300 bladder cancer cases in the United States and analyzed the results. They found that the prescription of Bactrim for urinary tract infections did not protect against developing bladder cancer.
The study, published today inThe Lancet, looked at data from more than 2,200 cases of bladder cancer, including the first national cancer study in more than two decades.
The results suggest that Bactrim, a popular antibiotic, may be more effective than the standard drugs used in treating UTIs.
“Our findings show that Bactrim, a drug commonly used to treat urinary tract infections, may be more effective than conventional drugs in preventing development of bladder cancer,” said lead author Dr. Steven Nissen, the chairman of the National Cancer Institute.
“We are excited to see that the Bactrim-based drugs that have been developed for UTI treatment have been found to be equally effective. We are also pleased to see that patients who have received Bactrim treatment had a lower rate of recurrence, a reduction in the number of new cases of bladder cancer, and an overall improvement in their quality of life,” he said.
A separate study published today inJAMA Network Openfound that Bactrim significantly reduced the risk of developing bladder cancer. Researchers in France, Australia and Canada also found that treatment with Bactrim had a small but statistically significant impact on cancer risk.
The results were published Monday in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine. That study was part of a larger study that found that patients who received Bactrim had a higher risk of developing bladder cancer.
Bactrim, also known as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, is a combination of two drugs. These drugs are used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Bactrim and trimethoprim are commonly used in the treatment of UTIs.
Researchers in France, Australia and Canada studied the risk of developing bladder cancer among women who were diagnosed with the infection between October and April 2011.
“Women who have received Bactrim and trimethoprim for UTI treatment have been found to be at an increased risk of developing bladder cancer,” said Dr. John Lefebvre, director of the Cancer Prevention Unit at the Cancer Institute of Toronto.
“It may also be useful to consider the impact of Bactrim on the risk of developing bladder cancer in patients who have been diagnosed with UTI-related urinary tract infections.”
The study followed 1,063 women diagnosed with bladder cancer from 2001 to 2014. The researchers analyzed data from 7,912 cases of bladder cancer. They found a statistically significant increase in the risk of developing bladder cancer among women who received Bactrim and trimethoprim.
The researchers also found a lower risk of developing bladder cancer among those who took Bactrim or had received a higher dose.
“Bactrim has been shown to be an effective treatment for urinary tract infections that is not associated with increased risk of developing bladder cancer,” said Dr. Michael J. Schulman, professor of medicine at Yale University School of Medicine and co-author of the study. “However, it is important to note that while Bactrim has been shown to be an effective treatment for urinary tract infections, it is not a cure for these infections.”
The study was funded by a research grant from the National Institutes of Health. Additional funding was provided by the National Cancer Institute and the National Cancer Institute's Clinical Research Institute.
The researchers said that while these findings may support the use of Bactrim for bladder cancer prevention, their findings may also be used by other research groups to determine the best treatment for this indication.
“A significant amount of research is needed to determine whether this drug is effective for the treatment of patients with urinary tract infections, but it is also important to continue to use this drug even after the bladder cancer is discovered,” said Dr.
“We are hopeful that this study will provide useful new information to patients, as well as provide important new information for others who may benefit from taking Bactrim,” said Dr. David P. Lechleiter, a University of Michigan physician and study co-author of the study.
